Who We Are

A J Ludlow Ltd is a manufacturer of fine-art materials of unprecedented quality and brilliance. I formed the company because I saw the need to introduce a superior artists’ watercolour that was once again made in Britain.  

We have adopted the name A J Ludlow Colours, because it is what we do, we make and sell artists’ colours, not paints, but the finest quality artists’ colours. 

A J Ludlow's company ethos is to follow in the footsteps of the traditional Artists’ Colourmen; each batch lovingly manufactured by a skilled artisan and finished by hand. All our fine-art materials are made in the UK with the best ingredients and finest pigments.

The reason I do what I do

From an early age and all through my adult life, I have always enjoyed painting as a pleasurable pastime, one of enjoyment and self-fulfilment, a feeling that continues to this day. Although my chosen career path was as a chemist, I continued to enjoy painting and have recently become a member of the Royal Watercolour Society of Wales. However, the real passion was when I fused the art and the science together and developed my career as a chemist with a profound knowledge and expertise in art materials. 
 
I have long held the view, that many of the artists' watercolour paints available in the market place do not live up to the promises made in their marketing materials, and fall short in the quality, I expect as a professional artist. I therefore set about developing my own range of watercolours, based on my professional code of ethics as a Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and my creative needs as an artist. It is to this end that I can now introduce my own fine-art products to you and hope that you will share my joy when painting with them.

Heritage Crafts

We are so proud to be a member of Heritage Crafts, which is fitting as A J Ludlow is a traditional Artists' Colourman.


Heritage Crafts is the national charity for traditional heritage crafts. Working in partnership with Government and key agencies, it provides a focus for craftspeople, groups, societies and guilds, as well as individuals who care about the loss of traditional crafts skills.  It is working towards a healthy and sustainable framework for the future and we are proud to be part of it.


It is a UNESCO accredited NGO for Intangible Cultural Heritage.

We are so pleased to be a part of the  Green Growth Pledge

We are so pleased to be involved with the Welsh government's Green Growth Pledge.


At A J Ludlow, we put green growth in the centre of our products and business plan. We only source raw materials from reputable and responsible suppliers and use packaging, which can either be widely recycled, including glass and metal containers, or is biodegradable.


Our ongoing project is to cut down our energy use and so reduce our carbon footprint.
