Using only the highest-quality pure pigment, our high-performance and light fast special effects pigment, A J Ludlow Iridescent (No.4) powder is suitable for all home-made paint formulations, including water, oil and acrylic colours, as well as solvent-based acrylic or polycarbonate resins.

Mix the pigment with the A J Ludlow Watercolour Binder and Painting medium to make home-made watercolours or alternative binding mediums, including drying oils for oil colours and oil-based paints, acrylic emulsion for home-made acrylic painting colours and for three-dimensional work, solvent-based acrylic, or polycarbonate resins. With excellent light fastness, this iridescent pigment can be used in automotive top-coat lacquers.

Figure 1: Gently fold the dry powder into the binder with a spatula, taking care not to generate dust.

It is not necessary to grind this pigment in the paint binder, as it can be easily incorporated using a spatula (see figure 1). In fact, excessive mixing of the pigment may damage the particle shape, which in turn will affect the brilliance and colour of this iridescent pigment.

Pure pigment powder Iridescent (No.4) is an interference pigment, which changes colour depending on the viewing angle. This particular pigment offers colour graduations that flow in and out of each other in a multitude of shades depending on the viewing angle and the incidence of light. The colour shift (or colour “flop”) of Iridescent (No.4) goes from blue to silver (figure 2) and is shown to its best advantage over dark backgrounds.

Figure 2: The colour “flop” of a watercolour paint made from A J Ludlow Iridescent (No.4) pure pigment powder, painted onto a black background and photographed at the two extreme viewing angles.

Although this iridescent pigment powder is non-hazardous, it is a very light weight powder, which becomes airborne easily, so avoid creating dust when using and avoid breathing in the dust. Be careful when removing pigment powder from the jar and avoid spilling; cover work surfaces and floors in the area as a precaution and avoid using near carpets and other soft furnishing.
