Ox-gall Liquid is just one of the Watercolour Mediums that complement the A J Ludlow Professional Watercolour range. Made in the UK using the same fine quality materials we use to make our watercolours; this medium has been created to give an additional dimension and creativity to the artist.
Ox-gall is a suitable levelling agent for watercolours, producing a smoother free flowing wash, but should be used sparingly to avoid strong absorption of the paint. It can also be used on very hard sized paper to reduce surface tension, as well as being used to degrease grounds other than paper. It can be applied directly (with a brush or cloth) to the substrate, or added sparingly to the watercolour or wash water.
It produces interesting tendril-like patterns when gently introduced to already applied damp watercolour and enhances colour bleed in to the wash water, which can be used to interesting effect as shown in the paintings below.

Dissolved ox-gall tends to flocculate over time, but this has no influence on its application.
Addition of Ox-gall to gouache allows the water-based colour to float on thickened water and so be used as a paint for water-based marbling.
