Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH can trace its history back to 1886, when Carl Hahne purchased the “Reylingehäusische Papiermühle”, which had been in operation as a paper mill since 1584. Hahne, changed the mill’s name to “Büttenpapierfabrik Hahnemühle” and introduced artist papers and high purity filter paper to its production, which was already producing finest handmade writing and foolscap papers. In 1902 the company was converted into a limited company (GmbH) and merged with Schleicher & Schuell from Düren, who became the sole owner of Hahnemühle in 1927. The company was eventually renamed “Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH” in 2002 and demerged from Schleicher & Schuell in 2004.

Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH is now regarded as a world leading papermaker and many galleries, museums and collectors trust their Fine Art papers, including their Fine art Inkjet papers developed in the late 1990s. All their Fine Art and speciality papers are manufactured according to traditional recipes from quality cotton fibres, cellulose or fast-growing plant fibre and pure spring water.
